18 But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. 20 These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.”
God shows clearly in this scripture that He always looks at our motives, at our hearts, and not just on what we say or what we do.
You can obey and do everything written in the Bible, and still displease God. You may just be obeying because everyone is doing it. Or because your parents wants it. Or your friends or pastor or leader likes it. But God looks at the heart.
Is your heart so happy to know God and so thankful for all that God did for you and through you, such that you are obeying Him and doing things to please Him? If so, then you have nailed down the whole mystery of living!
As Jesus said in scripture, the whole Law and the Prophets (that is the whole Bible during Jesus’ time) are based on only two commands: Love the Lord with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul and with all your strength. The second is like that: Love your neighbor as yourself.
So if we do things because of our overflowing love for God and for our neighbor; if we speak blessings because of our overflowing love for God and our neighbor; if we go to church, heal the sick, preach the gospel, raise the dead, even fart in the toilet :), because of our overflowing love for God and for our neighbor, then MAN YOU’VE GOT IT! That is all God wants and desires for all of His creation! To build the best loving relationship with Him first, then with each other, and everything else will just follow!
I pray that every person who reads these verses would have an explosive revelation of God’s greatest desire for your life. May your heart’s passion for God continuously grow. May you deliberately learn to love God and your neighbor more. In Christ’s name, through the work of the Holy Spirit, Amen!
