And the lord blessed Hannah, and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, Samuel grew up in the presence of the lord. . . Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew taller and grew in favor with the lord and with the people. 1 Samuel 2:21,:26 (NLT)
Three days later they finally discovered him in the Temple, sitting among the religious teachers, listening to them and asking questions. . . Jesus grew in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and all the people. Luke 2:46,52 (NLT)
Growing in wisdom, stature, and favor with God and all people seems to be connected with being in the presence of God. When both Samuel and Jesus were still a boy, they spent time with God while others were doing other things, and they grew in wisdom, stature and favor with God and all the people.
Last Sunday our family discussed about Genesis 1 to 3 wherein man had nothing else to do but to eat, tend the garden, take dominion over the whole earth and everything in it, and listen, walk and talk with God. It seems that we were created to just listen, walk and talk with God, and enjoy God’s creation.
I am reminded again that my life is not really about frantically trying to beat work deadlines, so that I could represent God well with my boss and clients. In doing so, I am stressed throughout the day and night, I am not able to relate well with the people around me, even my family, and most especially with God.
What if I just do what I was created to do? First thing in the morning in a place where nobody would bother me (not even mobile phones or Facebook), I would first spend time reading the Bible and listening to God, remembering all His love for me, what He did for me through Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection. All the wooing He did even when I kept rejecting Him. All the provisions He gave even while I was still a sinner. Introducing Himself as Abba Father, or daddyGod, instead of an impersonal God just waiting to punish me when I make a mistake. Introducing Himself as a good shepherd, providing peace, security, basic needs, love, so that I will not need anything else.
When I realize God’s love for me, it makes me see myself run to my daddyGod, seeing Him with loving eyes, smiling lips, open arms, and once I get to Him, He hugs me and keeps me warm and safe in His loving arms. Then after that, nothing else matters. I have all that I need right there.
And right in that place, I know God will take care of my work and give me wisdom, favor, and stature with my boss and clients. I can always listen to Him for wisdom about my work so that I could be more productive, and still able to relate with people around me with grace and wisdom. I could now enjoy all of His creation and take dominion over it. All because of God’s great love for me. All because I saw my daddyGod. All because I am in my daddyGod’s presence…in His loving arms. Thus I believe, this is the main purpose of man. 🙂
